Montana Income Tax Filing Options and Resources

If you have a filing requirement, you must file a Montana Individual Income Tax Return (Form 2).

Taxpayers may either file their return electronically or by paper. Some taxpayers may be eligible to use free filing and preparation resources.

Eligible recipients of the Montana Elderly Homeowner/Renter Credit can file a Form 2EC using our TransAction Portal. Eligible recipients are filers that do not otherwise have a Montana income tax filing requirement.

If you do not qualify for one of our Free File Alliance Offers, you may file using Approved Individual Income Tax Software.

Many Montana libraries offer internet access. Check with your local library to learn if internet access is available to file your individual income tax return.

VITA offers free tax help to low-to-moderate income people who need assistance preparing their tax returns. Trained volunteers provide VITA sites at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, credit unions, etc. Most locations also offer free electronic filing.
