The Property Assessment Division (PAD) administers Montana's property tax laws and is responsible for valuing taxable property throughout the state. Our work helps ensure that residential, commercial, agricultural, forest, industrial, and business property is assessed uniformly and equitably under Montana law.
As part of Montana's statewide property tax system, PAD establishes property values, maintains ownership records, administers property tax assistance and exemption programs, and provides certified taxable values to local governments. These values serve as the foundation for property tax administration and help support important public services such as schools, law enforcement, fire protection, transportation, and other local government services throughout Montana.
Through a central office in Helena and field offices located throughout the state, PAD works with property owners, local governments, and taxpayers to support a fair, consistent, and transparent property tax system.
