Job Overview:

This position resides in the Director's Office of the Department of Revenue. The incumbent performs a variety of duties assigned by management. Duties include comprehensive analyses of problems related to all aspects of established and emerging tax and related economic policy issues such as individual and corporate income taxes, general and selective sales and use taxes, natural resource taxes, property taxes, and other miscellaneous taxes.  Develops and manages research, analysis, and information dissemination projects to provide revenue estimation, tax policy analysis, economic research, and analysis, and to prepare departmental reports.  The incumbent also participates in the design, implementation, monitoring, and revision of statistical models and databases used in analysis of current and emerging tax policy issues at the federal, state, and local government levels and uses the models to determine impacts on relevant groups of taxpayers and state and local government tax revenues. The position does not supervise other staff.

All computer systems and tax guidelines will be trained on the job.

Job Overview:

This position resides in the Property Assessment Division of the Department of Revenue. The Exemption Processing Specialist (EPS) assists in the processing and oversight of the Property Tax Assistance Program (PTAP), the Montana Disabled Veterans (MVD) Program, the Homestead Rate Reduction Program (HRRP), and other exemption programs or processes the Property Assessment Division may be responsible for administering. The EPS is responsible for reviewing, processing, and maintaining exemption applications submitted by property owners, businesses, or other eligible parties, while ensuring timely and accurate application processing in accordance with state laws, regulations, and department and division policies. The position requires strong attention to detail, citizen service skills, and the ability to interpret Montana statutes.

Hours & Location:

This is a part-time permanent position and is open to ANY PAD field office, excluding offices located in Shelby, Havre, Lewistown, Malta, Plentywood, Sidney, Baker, Miles City, Forsyth, Roundup, Billings, Red Lodge, Columbus, Livingston, Polson, Jordan, Thompson Falls.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Review and verify incoming exemption applications for completeness and eligibility.
  • Communicate with applicants to obtain missing documentation or clarification.
  • Research exemption issues.
  • Interpret and apply applicable laws, rules, and guidelines related to various exemption types.
  • Enter and maintain accurate records in relevant databases or systems, ensuring that exemption recordkeeping complies with applicable regulations and professional standards.
  • Prepare correspondence, notices of determination, and official documentation regarding exemption status.
  • Collaborate with field office staff, legal staff, central office staff, and leadership on complex or questionable applications.
  • Communicate exemption status determinations with applicants, field offices, and county officials.
  • Respond to public inquiries via phone, email, or in person regarding exemption processing and criteria.
  • Conduct audits or reviews of previously granted exemptions.

This position resides in the Property Assessment Division of the Department of Revenue. The Industrial Appraiser I position is an advanced-level role specializing in the appraisal of industrial and personal properties. Employees at this level assist with the valuation of assigned simple industrial properties to support fair and equitable tax assessments, working under appropriate supervision rather than independently on complex valuations. The position requires knowledge of commercial and industrial appraisal methodologies, including the cost approach to valuation, and the ability to analyze property characteristics that may at times be complex or unique. While the role does not include mentoring less-experienced staff, it may involve responding to inquiries from lower-level appraisers and supporting departmental appraisal functions through accurate data analysis, clear written and verbal communication, and collaboration with senior industrial appraisal staff. This position resides in the Business & Income Taxes Division of the Department of Revenue. BIT’s tax examiner I’s perform a variety of duties assigned by management. Duties include conducting technical level examinations on assigned tax returns that involve research, verifying data, adjusting returns, providing communications to taxpayers and their representatives, and participating in the appeal process. Tax examiner I’s assist with development of audit programs and procedures, draft summary reports of audit findings, and testify as an expert witness. Education:

The above competencies are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, business administration, or public administration supplemented by college coursework in accounting or closely related field.
  • One year of job-related work experience in auditing, tax examination, or accounting practices.  
  • Other combinations of education and experience are evaluated on an individual basis.
