Mobile ID Verification for Cannabis Dispensaries
Montana has Launched Mobile IDs
As of September 1, 2025, the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) has made mobile IDs available. A digital version of a Montana ID may be stored in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. Additionally, a mobile ID verifier app is available for download by cannabis businesses.
What Does This Mean?
Consumers may add their MVD-issued driver's license to their electronic wallet to be used for the purchase of cannabis. This digital version is a legal form of identification, and can be confirmed by a cannabis business by using a mobile ID verifier app.
How Does This Affect Montana Cannabis Rules for IDing?
Digital IDs have already been authorized. ARM 42.39.409(12)(a) states,
“A marijuana dispensary licensee and its employees must refuse to sell marijuana or marijuana products to any consumer unless the consumer possesses and presents one of the following forms of valid and unexpired photo identification showing that the consumer is 21 years of age or older: a driver's license or temporary driver's permit issued by Montana or any other state or territory of the United States, including any state or territory that has authorized digital driver's licenses.”
However, the business will still need to verify if the license has expired or not.
