Montana Department of Revenue Encourages E-filing This Tax Filing Season

HELENA – As income tax return filing opens this week, the Montana Department of Revenue reminds taxpayers about the advantages of filing electronically and about expectations for refund timelines. You can receive your tax refund sooner if you file your taxes electronically.

“We encourage taxpayers to e-file your state income taxes because you’ll get your refunds faster. But no matter how you file, we appreciate the effort that it takes,” said Mike Kadas, director of the Department of Revenue.

On January 23, the Department of Revenue started processing Montana 2016 individual income tax forms. Taxpayers can e-file their state returns for free on the department’s TransAction Portal (TAP) https://tap.dor.mt.gov/. Montana taxpayers can also e-file federal and state individual income tax returns using IRS software or an approved third-party software provider listed under Online Services at revenue.mt.gov

Taxpayer assistance is available year-round through the department’s call center. To ask questions or get help filing your Montana tax return, call toll free to 1-866-859-2254, or in Helena to 444-6900. Regular call center hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The department will extend hours during the last week of tax season.

Walk-in assistance is available at the Department of Revenue’s Helena office at 125 North Roberts, east of the Capitol. There are also more than 100 volunteer tax preparation sites around the state through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and AARP Tax-Aide Montana. To find out if you qualify for free tax preparation assistance and to see a list of locations, visit www.montanafreefile.org.

You can also fill out and submit 2016 Montana tax forms on paper. You can print forms for free from revenue.mt.gov or pick them up at libraries, post offices, county offices, and some banks around the state. Keep in mind that no matter how early you submit a paper tax return, you’ll receive your refund faster if you e-file because of the extended time required to process paper.

Because of the ongoing nationwide increase in identity theft and filing of fraudulent returns, the department takes time to review returns to make sure they are valid. This means that the department cannot always give you a timeframe for how long it will take to issue your refund. “We want to make sure the returns we receive are really from you before we send you a refund. We want to protect your money and we appreciate your patience if your refund takes a little longer to get to you,” said Director Kadas.

Regardless of how you file, if you request a direct deposit of your refund it is important to confirm the accuracy of your bank routing and account numbers to eliminate delays and errors.

Did you know?

You can look up liquor license information on TAP in the Liquor section. You can search for license information by city, county, license ID, license type, or name. For example, you can look up how many distilleries and breweries are currently licensed in Montana, or you can find out who owns the license for that bar that just closed down in your town. Other licensing information is available on our Liquor Control website and in the Biennial Report

You can look up tax revenue and lots of other tax information in the department’s Biennial Report. Wondering about revenue from the coal severance or the oil and natural gas tax? It’s in there. Need to know the amount of property taxes paid in your county? It’s in there. Liquor taxes and sales? They’re in there, too.
